I'm on the third book for my SoIaF re-read, and even before I finished the first one I realized that half of my theory was wrong.

So, my original theory was that Jon Snow was not actually Ned's bastard, but instead King Robert's, with possibly Lyanna as the mother to still give him Stark blood.

I still maintain that Ned is not Jon's father, and am firmly convinced that Lyanna was his mother.

I am now thoroughly convinced that King Robert is NOT his father though.

I think on my original read-through, I conflated the idea of Ned NOT being his father (some of his reaction were just off) with the discovery of all of Robert's bastard children. The fact that Jon was dark-haired and the Baratheon black-hair got mixed in there too. Added to the fact that Robert loved Lyanna, and is not the type to wait for marriage...

However, Ned's thought processes during the hunt for/discovery of the bastards never related to Jon Snow. He never thought of his "own" bastard, which puts that theory on shaky ground. Plus, Robert knows of/has acknowledged other of his own bastards, so it doesn't make sense to hide it from him.

Hiding the fact that Rhaegar sired a bastard on his beloved Lyanna, though? That makes perfect sense.

  • Robert has proven that he has no hesitation to kill a child of Targaryen blood.
  • Rhaegar raped Lyanna multiple times when he kidnapped her.
  • Lyanna died in a "bed of blood", and they've referred the birthing bed as a bed of blood before.
  • Lyanna begged Ned not to tell/to keep it secret. Why wouldn't she want to present her love with their child? Unless it wasn't Robert's. Having Rhaegar's child (especially letting him live) could be seen as dishonouring both Robert and Lyanna.
  • Ned has proven he's willing to dishonour himself for the love of his family. Lying to cover Catelyn capturing Tyrion. Confessing to treason.
  • Lyanna's favourite flower was the blue rose, which surrounded her on her deathbed. One of Danaerys' visions with the Undying ones was of a blue rose in a great wall of ice (and Jon serves at the Wall)
  • Jon Snow has purple eyes, like the Targaryens.

There's probably more, but that's all I could think of off the top of my head. I'm keeping my eyes open as I continue my read-through. Keep in mind, I haven't read the newest book yet, so my theory may get destroyed then and there. We'll see.
