And You Beside Me
A Kingdom Hearts Fanfiction
By Jade Dixon
Aqua watched the others with a gentle smile curving her lips, leaning back on her arms against the grassy knoll she was sitting on. The sun warmed her through, and reminded her that she was back in the Realm of Light.
In the field that stretched out before her, Terra and Ven were horsing around under the guise of "training". She sat up and brought her knees closer to her chest, wrapping her arms around and leaning her chin upon them. Happiness filled her heart as she watched them, glad to see how cautious Terra was being with their little "brother". Even more glad to see how Ven was having none of it and egging the older boy into more and more outrageous stunts.
In time, the rift Master Xehanort had driven between them would heal. It had already begun.
Farther down the field, she could see Riku solemnly instructing Kairi in various manoeuvers with her Keyblade. The girl would repeat the movement with a look of determination on her face. From what Aqua had gathered, the Princess of Heart was behind her friends in terms of martial skills, but was determined to catch up as soon as possible.
The shy glances and occasional blushes she shared with the silver-haired boy were probably a contributing factor to her determination. Aqua wished them luck. The Worlds needed more love in them.
A brief rustle and thump besides her located the final member of their extended party. Sora mimicked her posture, and watched the others with her for a few moments in silence.
"You shouldn't be all alone by yourself," he explained, without explaining anything at all. "I was surprised to see you weren't with Terra and Ven."
"They're having a 'boy' moment," she told him with an unrepentant grin, tilting her head to face the bearer of the Kingdom Key. "I'm surprised you're not helping train Kairi."
Sora made a face, staring at his fellow islanders. "I'd just be in the way."
She watched him cautiously, the smile slipping slowly from her face. It was the first time she'd heard that... self-deprecating tone from the boy.
She prodded him cautiously. "You're not letting her training suffer because you're jealous of them, are you?"
He reared back a bit, looking genuinely startled. "What?" He whipped his head back to the other two, and his face softened, smiling for the first time since he'd sat down. "No, I'm happy for them. They've been through so much; they deserve to be happy." He made that face again. "I just wouldn't be any good at teaching."
Aqua blinked rapidly, unsure of the trio's backstory. She chose not to delve, but to stay on their original topic.
"Why would you say that? I've seen you fight; you're good."
'Good' was an understatement. Sora was devastating to watch on the battlefield, slicing through Heartless and Nobodies alike with the ease of a hot knife through butter. She wished they'd had his aid against the Unversed, as impossible as that wish was.
Sora stretched his legs out, leaning back on one arm, while the other rubbed the back of his head ruefully.
"I know I'm a good fighter, I can beat Riku more often than not these days,"--Modesty was obviously not one of his strong points--"but I... How did Riku put it? I have an," his faced scrunched up, obviously looking for the exact phrasing. "An 'aptitude for combat without being technically skilled'." Sora stuck his tongue out playfully at the boy in question, who was too far away to notice. He turned to face Aqua again.
"That's his nice way of saying that I fight like a wild animal, and while it works, he has no idea how." The brunet smiled ruefully.
Aqua frowned a little, not really agreeing with the statement. True, Sora's battle style was more unstructured than she was used to, but he had also developed specific techniques that worked beautifully against the trickier monsters. She'd have to have a word with Riku when Kairi was a bit more advanced and could benefit from Sora's unique skills. She held her silence for now; it was not her battle to fight.
"You could always join Terra and Ven," she suggested reasonably. The two seemed to be taking a short break, talking to each other lazily while lying in the grass.
Silence greeted her, and she couldn't say she was surprised. She hadn't known Sora for very long, but ever since his group had joined her and Terra, he'd avoided the other brunet. When Ventus was woken up, he'd avoided the other boy as well. She wasn't sure why, but she got the feeling the two made him uncomfortable.
"Nah," he finally replied, turning to face her fully with a smile. "I'm good here."
Was he... Was Sora blushing?
"It's strange, y'know?" He started looking away from her to stare at Ventus. "I'd forgotten he was even there, never really noticed his presence. Now that he's gone--separate, I mean--I feel...
"Lonely."
He drew in on himself, drawing his knees back to his chest, looking longingly at the others interacting so casually with each other. Aqua stretched out of her own ball, curling her legs to the side and laying a gentle hand on Sora's shoulder.
"Hey," she shook him slightly to make sure she had his attention. "You're never alone. You have Riku and Kairi, all of your friends throughout the Worlds. If you keep them close in your Heart, you'll always have company."
"What about you? Are you one of my friends?" Sora was looking at her from a shy sideways glance. His cheeks were red again. Aqua couldn't help but smile at him.
"Of course. Terra and Ven, too, if you'd let them."
"Yeah."
They sat in silence for a few moments. Aqua felt the moment slipping away from them, and sought desperately for a way to recapture the warm feeling she'd gained during their conversation.
She reached out, and gripped one of Sora's hands, letting it dangle between them. The simple human connection calmed her, but she didn't turn to look at her companion. She closed her eyes, a smile tugging at her lips, and enjoyed the warmth.
The hand in hers squeezed back, then tugged throwing her off-balance. Her shoulder was caught by Sora's free hand, and she looked up at him in surprise, a giggle forming without her permission in her throat at the start of what she assumed would be some friendly tussling.
Except Sora's gloved hand didn't stay on her shoulder once she'd regained a modicrum of balance. It cupped her cheek, and his nervous-looking face leaned in to kiss her firmly on the lips.
Her eyes widened, then closed trying to process what she was feeling. His lips were warm and undemanding against hers, and heat travelled through her body, expelling any trace of the coldness she'd carried with her from the Dark Realm. She pressed her own lips back against his.
And then he was gone, scrambling up, and blushing furiously, leaving her sitting stunned where he had joined her not so long ago. As he started away, he stopped and looked back at her. He still looked nervous.
"Aqua? You're not alone either." He gave her a gentle smile, trembling a bit, then ran over to where Riku and Kairi were still training, having missed the entire thing.
The same could not be said of Terra and Ventus. They were staring at her, Ven's jaw dropped in shock, and Terra's face was a thundercloud. The two immediately raced over to her, not without a deathglare or two at Sora's departing back from Terra.
Their questions came out in a flood, mostly from Terra wondering if the other brunet needed to be Hurt, but Aqua just stared after Sora in a daze, her own cheeks heating up in a blush.
Her fingertips trailed over her lips absently, before they were needed to grab Terra to prevent him from doing something stupid. Ven was on his otherside, and this time when they wrestled, it was all three of them in the heap. She laughed for pure joy, and basked in her family. Even when Ven kept giving her dirty leers whenever he caught her looking at Sora.
The future had never been so bright.
